Health Spending Accounts

A Health Spending Account (HSA) is a special benefit that lets incorporated business owners use pre-tax corporate dollars to pay for personal health and dental expenses. It’s a tax-free reimbursement for you and a tax-deductible expense for your business. Think of it like your own custom benefits plan—with more control.

  1. You choose how much your business will allocate per employee (e.g. $2,500)
  2. You pay for an eligible medical or dental expense out of pocket
  3. You submit the receipt to your HSA provider
  4. The expense is adjudicate to confirm it is eligible under CRA guidlines
  5. You are reimbursed the total amount of the expense – 100% tax free from your HSA balance

No co-pays, no complicated forms, just simple and fast reimbursements

Health Spending Accounts can be setup with a third party provider or they can be self managed in house.

Third party providers typically charge a percentage of claims as a fee for the company.  This amount is subject to GST.  This amount can be written off similar to any amount used to pay claims.

To qualify for Health Spending you need to either:

  1. Have an incorporated business which actively employees you (owner-operator pulling a T4)
  2. Be a sole proprietor with at least 1 arms length employee

Employee’s spouses and dependents can be added to the plan.

Health Spending can be used for qualifying expenses as defined by the CRA.  The general rules of thumb are anything covered under the METC or that is medical and not cosmetic.  Popular expenses include:

  • Dental work (cleanings, fillings, orthodontics)
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Vision (glasses, laser eye surgery, contacts)
  • Paramedical Services (massage, Physio, Chiro)
  • Mental health Support
